The Spark of an Idea

Every workshop begins with an idea—a simple yet powerful concept that we believe will resonate with people. For Spin Spin Sticks, the vision was to create a fun, hands-on activity that could be enjoyed by people of all ages, from kids to grandparents. We wanted something that allowed participants to connect with nature, express their creativity, and most importantly, leave with a one-of-a-kind creation that was uniquely theirs.

The idea of decorating a tree branch seemed simple enough, but we knew we needed to add layers to make it meaningful. The branch would be cut to the child’s height, adding a personal touch, and we wanted the experience to encourage bonding—both between the child and their parents and between the participants themselves.

すべてのワークショップは、アイデアから始まります。シンプルでありながら強力なコンセプトであることは、たくさんの人をひきつける要素となります。スピンスピンスティックスの場合、そのビジョンはこれは楽しいと感じてもらうことであり、子どもからお年寄りまであらゆる年齢の人が楽しめる実践的なアクティビティとなっています。私たちは、参加者が自然とつながり、創造性を表現し、何よりも独自のユニークな創造物を残すことができるアイデアを望んでいました。

木の枝を飾るというアイデアは至ってシンプルですが、より意味のあるものにするためにはさらにひねりを加える必要があることはわかっていました。そこで枝を子どもの背の高さにカットしたり、個人的な思いをそこに加えることで、お子さんとその両親であったり参加者同士の絆が深まるような仕掛けを考えました。

Sourcing Materials: From Nature to Craft

Once we have the concept in place, it’s time to source the materials. For Spin Spin Sticks, the first material we needed was, of course, the branches! We love sourcing natural elements because they not only provide a connection to the outdoors but also allow the creativity of the participants to shine.

We carefully select branches that are sturdy enough to hold ribbons, fabrics, and other decorations, ensuring that they’re also safe for handling by little hands. Next comes the fabric—colorful, soft cotton strips that will add texture and personality to each branch. We also make sure to offer a wide variety of colors and patterns so participants can express their individuality.

Creating Inclusive Experiences

At Beyond The World, inclusivity is at the heart of everything we do. We want our workshops to be accessible and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of age, background, or ability. That’s why we spend extra time planning how to make each experience easy to participate in while also fostering a sense of community.

For Spin Spin Sticks, we made sure that the activity was adjustable for all ages. For younger children, the process is simplified with pre-cut strips of fabric, while older kids and adults can take their time and experiment with different textures, colors, and designs. We also ensure that the instructions are clear and easy to follow, so no one feels left out.

Beyond just the activity itself, the workshop space is designed to encourage socializing and collaboration. Participants are encouraged to share their ideas, ask for help, and celebrate each other’s creativity.

The day of the workshop is when the magic happens. We set up the space, bringing all the materials together—branches, fabric strips, ribbons, markers, and tape. We also create a welcoming environment, setting up comfortable workstations, providing fun music, and offering snacks to keep everyone energized.

Our team is ready and eager to guide participants through the process, making sure that each person feels supported and encouraged throughout the experience. We love seeing the variety of designs that come to life: each branch becomes a unique work of art, a reflection of the individual who created it.

The beauty of workshops like Spin Spin Sticks is that they allow for personal expression while also creating a sense of shared experience. As participants decorate their branches, there’s a buzz of excitement in the air—laughter, conversation, and a sense of accomplishment.

The process of bringing workshops to life doesn’t stop once the event is over. We’re constantly looking for ways to improve and evolve. Feedback from participants is invaluable, and we use it to refine our experiences and ensure that every workshop is better than the last.

For example, after our Spin Spin Sticks workshop, we received wonderful feedback about how much the children loved the act of wrapping the fabric and how empowering it was to create something personalized. We’re currently brainstorming new activities that could build on that sense of ownership and creativity—stay tuned!
